HELP! You've got to move in a month!
You've just found out that you need to move and you only have a short time to do it! Whether it's because that's a conditon of the sale of your house, your Landlord needs your apartment to move his in-laws into or a sudden illness has forced you to re-evaluate your living arrangements, you need to move!
Professional organizers are adding new services to their slate of home solutions! Move Management is growing ever more popular and many organizers are now including this option as part of their service.
Move Managers
A Certified Move Manager will help you vet Movers so you get the best one for you; sort through your home and declutter it before you start packing. By organizing and decluttering before you start packing you won't be moving items you're going to give away, recycle or throw out when you unpack it at your new home. And you'll save money. Don't forget that Movers charge by weight, number of cartons moved and time to load and unload.
A good Move Manager will sort through your belongings with you, pack up as it's done and then unpack and get you organzied in your new home!
Senior Move Managers have additional training in working with seniors, boomers and zoomers who need to downsize and move out of their current home. They ensure that the wishes of the senior moving are carried out, that their new home resembles the old one ... they'll take digital photos of your Mom's favourite curio cabinet to make sure that the Peacock is put back exactly where it was for the last 20 years!
How do you begin downsizing on your own?
1. Be sure you sort your things before you buy storage containers. If you sort first, then you'll be sure to buy the right size and number of boxes. If you buy extra containers, you'll just fill them up with stuff!
2. Start with one shelf or drawer. Don't look at the whole room that needs to get decluttered. Pick one shelf ... how about the one at eye level ... and work on this one first. Feels great, doesn't it?
3. Limit your time! This is so important. Use a timer (dont' have one, use the one on your microwave) and set it for maximum 30 minutes! Stop when your timer goes off and give yourself a pat on the back for A JOB WELL DONE! Set aside time each day and you'll be amazed at how quickly you'll get decluttered.

4. Do you really need to rent a storage locker? If you are sorting through an estate or don't have the time to finish sorting ... then rent a locker BUT only for a very limited amount of time .... a month at the most. Remember that every month you don't make a decision about items that are stored, is costing you $$$ that you could put away for a wonderful holiday.
5. Keep things together! Have you ever "lost" the special lightbulb you need for your chandelier? Or know that you bought file folders for your home office? But can't find them. Keep things together that are similiar ... i.e. that special lightbulb should be kept with other lightbulbs and electrical items; the file folders should be put in your home office with other folders. It'll save you money, time and space! And you won't duplicate purchases.
6. Team up with a buddy! If you don't want to use the services of a Professional Organizer or Move Manager, working with a friend always makes it easier. Be sure you ask them to be objective and tell you when the dress 2 sizes too small doesn't fit anymore!
Even by following these few tips, you'll see the success and you'll feel great!
If you have a tight deadline or just can't seem to get started, then the use of a Professional Organizer if you're not moving, or a Move Manager to help you coordinate your move, will save you lots of time and stress!
Sonia Weller of Rose Home Solutions & Interior Decor says, "Often a client will call because they don't know where to begin downsizing or packing and feel lost! We'll meet with them, evaluate their needs, and give them a MasterPlan to follow and get them started. Some of our clients then take it and move through the downsizing themselves, but most often we'll work with them once or twice a week to keep them on track and ensure that everything is done by the deadline of the move. Our Move Management services is becoming more and more popular, especially with our elder clients as it saves time, money and stress."
